Viessmann family buys into Bayern Munich at a $4.5bn valuation, Bloomberg reports

The German industrial dynasty's investment vehicle has become the football club's fourth outside shareholder, with Max Viessmann set to join its supervisory board.

Bloomberg reports that Bayern Munich has sold a 5% stake to a German family office in a deal valuing the club at about $4.5 billion. The buyer is Viessmann Generations Group, the family-owned company founded in 1917 and led by chief executive Max Viessmann. German newspaper Bild reported the price at €250 million, which the club will initially place on fixed deposit. Max Viessmann is expected to join the supervisory board of FC Bayern München AG, enlarging it from nine to ten members. Club president Herbert Hainer said the step strengthens the ownership structure. The two organisations have had a brand partnership since 2018.

The club's three existing minority shareholders each hold just under 7.8%, and member control remains intact. Some reports suggest that because new shares are being issued, Viessmann's holding could end up slightly above 5%, and valuation estimates vary. The family sold its main heating business to Carrier Global for about €12 billion in a deal completed in January 2024.

Why it matters: This is a clear example of a family turning the proceeds of a business sale into long-dated, identity-rich holdings. A stake in a member-controlled club offers little control and modest financial return, but considerable visibility and network value. Viessmann's own description of the deal as a partnership for generations shows how families are using cultural assets to carry their name and values forward after the operating business has gone.
