ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming reclaims top spot on Hurun China Rich List

AI lifted Zhang Yiming's fortune to about $100bn as the 2026 Hurun list exposed a widening gap between technology and consumer or property wealth.

The Associated Press reports that Zhang Yiming, founder of TikTok owner ByteDance, has regained first place on the Hurun China Rich List with a fortune of about $100 billion, up 43%, a gain Hurun attributes almost entirely to artificial intelligence. Bottled water magnate Zhong Shanshan fell to second with $61 billion, down 23%, while Robin Zeng of battery maker CATL placed third. DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng entered at seventh, and Chen Tianshi, chair of AI chipmaker Cambricon, was tenth. Hurun counted a record 1,529 people worth more than 5 billion yuan, up 6.6% on last year. Xiaomi's Lei Jun was the biggest faller, his wealth halved to $25.1 billion.

Hurun chairman Rupert Hoogewerf described a two-speed economy, with founders in AI, semiconductors and robotics gaining while consumer, real estate and traditional manufacturing fortunes shrank. For the first time, according to the AP, no mainland Chinese property developer appears in the top 100. Hong Kong's The Standard adds that newcomers include Unitree founder Wang Xingxing and the founders of AI model groups Z.AI and MiniMax.

Why it matters: China's wealth map is being redrawn at speed. Fortunes built on property and consumer brands, long the bedrock of many family balance sheets, are giving way to founder wealth concentrated in a handful of AI and hardware companies. For families and their advisers, that means more concentrated, more volatile holdings, and a fresh generation of principals who may soon need governance, liquidity planning and family office structures of their own.
