Biography
Marco Poon is a third-generation member of a Hong Kong business-owning family and a founding partner of JCP Partners, an extended family office that combines fiduciary services with family advisory work. He is also managing director of Greenbury Capital Ltd, a single family office, and focuses on investment, family governance and the long-term stewardship of his family's platform.
Family business and investment
Poon's family business was started by his grandfather as a factory, and his father's generation developed it into a larger platform. JCP Partners describes him as a third-generation leader of a Hong Kong-headquartered global family conglomerate. He spent more than 15 years managing the family's China operations, where he was a key revenue generator, before turning his attention to investment and governance.
Within the family he handles finance and legal work, a role he describes as that of a gatekeeper, and his stated aim is to keep the platform together and integrate its resources. The family invests in financial markets and, through venture capital, in startups. At Greenbury Capital he leads investments in education, media and growth sectors across Greater China and South-east Asia.
Education and JCP Partners
Poon holds an MBA from Peking University's BiMBA programme with Vlerick Business School, an MSc in Global Finance from Fordham University and a Family Office Diploma from CEIBS, the China Europe International Business School.
JCP Partners was established by next-generation family members with close ties to the Centre for Family Business at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). It describes its purpose as helping families maintain their values and governance across generations, offering fiduciary services and family advisory work alongside asset management, with an emphasis on decision-making and succession planning. Poon has described JCP as a fiduciary advisory business operating on a net-fee model.
Next-generation networks
Poon is one of seven NxGen Ambassadors at the CUHK Centre for Family Business, where he promotes next-generation engagement and Hong Kong's family office ecosystem. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Young Entrepreneurs Committee of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce. He has also described a peer community in Hong Kong in which second- and third-generation family members share experience on governance, tax, charity and teaching children about money.
On Wealth Office
Poon spoke to Michael Macfarlane in the Wealth Office episode "What The Wealthy Understand About Risk That Banks Don't", which examined why time horizon and geopolitics change what a family regards as safe. He recounted recommending that his family invest in US bonds, only for the older generation to ask whether he had ever examined the issuing country's balance sheet, and explained how this taught him the difference between an institutional view of risk and that of a family thinking 100 or 200 years ahead. He argued that families need governance and charitable support that banks, built around investment revenue, are poorly placed to provide. He discussed why outside work and entrepreneurship prepare successors, China's progress in AI, automation and new energy, and opportunities in power grid modernisation, including in Japan. He closed by describing JCP and the importance of passing down values, stories and the understanding that each generation manages the family's wealth without owning it.
