Keyu Jin

Economist and professor specialising in China, author of The New China Playbook

Biography

Keyu Jin is a Chinese economist, professor and author whose work focuses on the Chinese economy, international macroeconomics and international finance. She is a professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, taught at the London School of Economics for fifteen years, and is the author of The New China Playbook: Beyond Socialism and Capitalism.

Education and academic career

Keyu Jin was born in Beijing in 1982. She attended the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China before completing her secondary education at the Horace Mann School in New York. She studied economics at Harvard University, receiving her bachelor's degree in 2004 and her PhD in 2009 with a dissertation on international trade and macroeconomic dynamics supervised by Kenneth Rogoff.

She joined the Department of Economics at the London School of Economics in 2009, becoming an associate professor in 2017 and remaining on the faculty until 2024. She held visiting positions at Yale University and the University of California, Berkeley, and in 2025 joined the Department of Finance at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as a professor. Her research has addressed global imbalances and asset prices, the drivers of China's growth model, the economic effects of the one-child policy and the high rate of saving in China. She has served on the editorial board of the Review of Economic Studies.

Writing and public commentary

The New China Playbook, published in 2023, sets out to explain China's economic development to a Western readership. It argues that China has followed its own path rather than the Western model, and examines the role of the state, local government competition and Chinese consumers and entrepreneurs. Jin has written columns for Project Syndicate and Caixin and opinion pieces for the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal and the South China Morning Post. She was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2014.

Advisory work and boards

Before and alongside her academic career, Jin worked in financial institutions including Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley, and has advised or consulted for the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. She served on a fintech working committee of the China Banking Regulatory Commission, is a member of the China Finance 40 Forum and has been a member of the Economic Council of the State of Qatar since 2023.

She has been a non-executive director of the luxury group Richemont since 2017, serving on its compensation and nominations committees, and joined the board of Jardine Matheson as an independent non-executive director in January 2024. She is also a non-executive director of the artificial intelligence company AInnovation, and served on the board of Credit Suisse Group from 2022 to 2023.

On Wealth Office

Keyu Jin appeared on Wealth Office in the episode "Why The USA Cannot Stop China", published in July 2026, in conversation with Michael Macfarlane in London. She set out three common Western misunderstandings of China, concerning its economic model, the relationship between people and authority, and the habit of viewing the country only through a security lens. She described a hybrid system of political centralisation and economic decentralisation, an innovation flywheel built on scale and manufacturing with Shenzhen as its clearest example, and the costs of overcapacity, debt and intense competition. The conversation closed on capital flows, the limits of containment and the soft power of China's younger, consumption-minded generation.
