Tech fortunes add a record $845bn as other billionaires lose ground

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index shows technology founders gaining a record sum in nine months, while fortunes built outside tech fell by $62bn.

Bloomberg reports that around 100 technology billionaires on its Billionaires Index gained a combined $845 billion in the first nine months of 2026, the largest increase for that period since the index began. Over the same stretch, billionaires whose wealth comes from other industries lost a combined $62 billion. Tech fortunes now total about $4.6 trillion, or roughly 36% of the wealth tracked by the index, although they make up only around a fifth of its members. Bloomberg's analysis, as reported by The Wealth Advisor and Quartz, adds that Americans captured 94% of the index's net gains and that all ten of the world's richest people have been American since 10 September. Elon Musk alone added about $310 billion through September.

The gains are closely linked to the artificial intelligence boom, which has lifted the valuations of listed technology groups and of privately held companies alike.

Why it matters: The figures show how concentrated new wealth creation has become, by sector and by country. For family offices, a fortune tied to one listed or private technology holding can move by tens of billions of dollars within months. That raises familiar questions about diversification, liquidity and how to value private stakes. The split between technology and other sectors also bears on philanthropy and on political debate about wealth taxes, both of which are increasingly shaped by a small group of founders.
