Oryx Energies founder Jean-Claude Gandur sells control to management

Bloomberg reports a management buyout valuing the Swiss-based African fuel distributor at about $1bn, ending founder control.

Bloomberg reports that Oryx Energies, a Swiss-based fuel distributor operating across Africa, has been sold in a management buyout valued at about $1 billion. Chief executive Moussa Diao and Hervé Bouvet, who runs the company's trading activity, have acquired a majority stake from founder Jean-Claude Gandur, whose AOG group owned the business. The size of the stake and the financing were not disclosed. The Africa Report has reported that a rival approach by Simon Tiemtoré of Lilium Capital, focused on Oryx's service stations and related businesses, did not proceed.

Oryx says it operates in more than 30 African countries, with over 410 service stations and more than 1,800 employees. Gandur founded AOG in 1987 and is also known as an art collector through the foundation that bears his name.

Why it matters: Management buyouts are one of several exit routes for founders who want to step back without selling to a trade buyer or listing the company. They can keep continuity for staff and customers, and they often depend on the founder's willingness to support the deal on agreed terms. For entrepreneurial families planning succession outside the family, the Oryx sale offers a reference point for how a large private business can pass to its leadership team. It also shows that African-focused businesses can attract buyers with deep operating knowledge of the markets.
