Gautam Adani returns to the top of the Forbes India rich list

Forbes says India's 100 richest hold about $1tn combined, with Adani overtaking Mukesh Ambani and Lakshmi Mittal posting the largest percentage gain.

Forbes India reports that Gautam Adani has reclaimed first place on its annual list of India's 100 richest people, with a family fortune of $112.7 billion after a gain of $20.7 billion. Mukesh Ambani, who had led for three years, is second at $86.3 billion after his wealth fell by $18.7 billion, which Forbes links to margin pressure at Reliance Industries. The combined wealth of the 100 richest held at about $1 trillion, despite a fall in the main stock index and a weaker rupee. Lakshmi Mittal recorded the biggest percentage rise, up 74% to $34.7 billion, which moved him to fourth place. The minimum wealth needed to join the list fell to $3 billion.

Adani's fortune remains below its 2022 peak of about $150 billion. A separate Hurun India ranking published in September also placed the Adani family first, although the two lists use different methods and valuation dates.

Why it matters: India's largest fortunes remain concentrated in family-controlled conglomerates, where swings in the value of listed holdings move rankings sharply from year to year. Mittal's position is a reminder that many Indian billionaires hold assets and residences across several countries. For families and advisers in the region, the rankings also reflect how currency moves and market performance can affect reported wealth in dollar terms without any change in underlying holdings.
