Biography
Kedge Martin is a charity leader, executive coach and adviser to wealthy families on philanthropy, succession and the next generation, who previously led two charities closely associated with Prince Harry. She has around thirty years of experience across business, politics, family offices and the charity sector in the United Kingdom, Europe and Africa.
Early career
Martin began her career in the late 1980s as a researcher to a Member of the European Parliament and as a political lobbyist. In 1991, shortly after the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, she set up a business in Poland. Her earlier career also included work at the NSPCC.
WellChild and Sentebale
As chief executive of WellChild, Martin grew a small paediatric research charity into a national charity for sick children in the United Kingdom. WellChild became Prince Harry's first patronage while she was running it. In 2009 she became the first full-time chief executive of Sentebale, the charity founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso to support vulnerable children in Lesotho. Her work there included turning around a complex situation and managing significant reputational risk, as well as planning and leading international visits. She left Sentebale in 2012. She was also a founding member of the Charities Forum for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, and she has described working within St James's Palace advising Prince William and Prince Harry on their philanthropic goals.
Coaching and advisory work
After leaving Sentebale, Martin turned to coaching and advisory work. In 2016 she co-founded Longbow, a values-based training and coaching business. She also founded Forward Career Coaching, formerly Youngbow, to support young adults starting their careers, and published a workbook on finding a first job. In 2018 she created Rutbusters, a coaching and business connections company for senior professionals in career transition.
Today she works as an independent adviser and coach to senior professionals, family business owners and members of the next generation. She designs programmes ranging from residential leadership development and philanthropy projects to family reconciliation and preparation for entering a family business, and she has been lead facilitator for the Standard Chartered Global Next Gen programme. She is a senior adviser to Ispahani Advisory, and Spear's lists her in its index of generational wealth and family business advisers as founder of KM Advisory, which works with families on sudden wealth, family business and succession. Her public roles have included membership of the Independent Monitoring Board at Harmondsworth Detention Centre near Heathrow and service as a governor of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
On Wealth Office
Kedge Martin appeared on Wealth Office alongside Jamie Webb in the episode "Are Billionaires Solving the Wrong Problems?" with Michael Macfarlane. Against the backdrop of a generational transfer of more than US$100 trillion and the rise of new wealth in Asia, they examined what patronage and visibility can achieve and how networks can build movements. Martin's answer to reputation washing and the distance between donors and the people they aim to help was proximity, and she urged new philanthropists to visit before they give. The discussion also covered starting the next generation early and small, the role of emotion in lasting commitment, and whether philanthropy needs to last for ever.
On Wealth Office
Kedge Martin and Jamie Webb draw on long experience of royal-linked charity work to examine how private wealth can give with more humility, proximity and lasting effect.
